Microsoft is scaling up its plans for a data center development in La Porte, Indiana.
According to a presentation shared during an April 21 community meeting at the La Porte Civic Center, Microsoft said that while it was continuing work developing an initial site in La Porte, it is also "seeking approval to rezone adjacent property to [its] site," which would be developed at a later date.
Microsoft's plans for La Porte have been ongoing since at least 2024, when the company revealed it would build a 245,000 sq foot (22,800 sqm) data center on 489 acres at the Radius Industrial Park, as part of a $1bn investment in Northwest Indiana.
The first phase would comprise six data centers and a substation, on the initial plot of land. Based on a draft conceptual site plan shared during the meeting, Microsoft is now planning to establish 17 buildings on an expanded plot of land between East 250 South, East State Road 4, and Stevens Road in La Porte. How many of these will be data centers is unclear.
Microsoft began site preparation work in March 2026, which will continue throughout the summer. Buildings 1-3 will be worked on through to the end of 2027, with the data centers expected to be completed in 2029.
The cloud giant further reiterated that it will build according to its Community-First AI Infrastructure initiative, announced earlier this year in response to growing concerns about rising power costs for communities and the impact on local resources.
Elsewhere in Indiana, Microsoft purchased 939 acres in Mishawaka, said to be for a data center project. In April 2025, the company sought to add another 40 acres.
La Porte is located in Northern Indiana, just southeast of Michigan City. Google is currently developing in Michigan City, having earlier this week revealed it had taken over the Project Maize data center campus planned for 402 Royal Road.
The Hoosier State is seeing growing interest from developers, and, in November 2025, Amazon Web Services announced it would invest $15bn in data centers and AI infrastructure in the state, in addition to the $11bn investment announced last year in St. Joseph County.
Meta, US Signals, DataBank, Netrality, and Digital Crossroads also have a presence in the state.
